Stock Removal Knives: Stock removal knives are still handmade. The knives are made by a process which the blade of a knife is created from pre-existing materials – usually steel. The maker begins with a block or sheet of metal, and then shapes it into the desired shape using various tools such as grinding wheels, files, abrasives, heat treating ovens and other equipment. Once complete, the maker may choose to add additional features such as handles or sheaths. Finally they will sharpen the blade to achieve its final form.

Hand Forged Knives: Blacksmithing is the process of hand forging a knife by heating metal and using tools such as anvils, hammers, tongs, and chisels to shape it. This involves heating the metal until it is malleable enough to be worked with the tools. The blacksmith will then use various hammering techniques to create a desired shape or texture on the blade. Depending on what type of knife is being made, further steps may include tempering and sharpening before polishing and finishing off with a handle.
